About PDF to Word

Be clear about what this does, because the category is full of overpromising: it extracts the text from a PDF into an editable DOCX, it does not rebuild the layout. That distinction is unavoidable rather than a shortcoming of this particular tool. A PDF stores glyphs at coordinates — it has no concept of a paragraph, a table or a heading — so any converter has to infer that structure, and inference is where fidelity is lost. If your goal is to get the words into Word and edit them, this does that well. If you need a pixel-identical Word replica of a designed document, no browser tool will give you that.

When to use PDF to Word

Reusing text from a report

Pull the wording out of a PDF you no longer have the source for, then reformat it in Word rather than retyping several thousand words.

Quoting from a long document

Extract everything once and search it in Word, instead of fighting a PDF viewer's find function across hundreds of pages.

Translating or rewriting content

Translation and editing tools work on text, not page coordinates. Extraction gets the content into a form they can actually process.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Layout is not reconstructed. Multi-column pages typically come out as one column, and tables lose their cell structure.
  • Scanned PDFs contain no text layer at all — they are images of pages, and produce an empty document. Run OCR first.
  • Images, charts and vector graphics are not carried into the DOCX; only text is extracted.
  • Reading order follows the PDF's internal text order, which for complex layouts is not always the visual order.
  • Fonts, sizes and colours are normalised rather than preserved.

How to pdf to word

  1. 1

Load the PDF — it is read in your browser and never uploaded.

  2. 2

The text layer is extracted page by page; larger documents take a few seconds.

  3. 3

Download the DOCX and open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.

  4. 4

Expect to reapply formatting — headings, columns and tables will need attention.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't my Word document look like the PDF?+

Because a PDF describes where each glyph sits on a page, not that a group of them forms a paragraph or a table. Converting means inferring that structure, and inference is imperfect. This tool prioritises getting the text out accurately and editable rather than approximating a layout that would need manual correction anyway.

My converted document is empty. What went wrong?+

Your PDF is almost certainly a scan — a photograph of pages with no text layer to extract. You can confirm it in any PDF viewer: if you cannot select the text with your cursor, there is no text to extract. Run the OCR tool first to generate a text layer.

Are my documents uploaded to a server?+

No. Extraction runs in your browser, so the PDF never leaves your device. That matters here more than for most tools, since the documents people convert to Word are disproportionately contracts, reports and records.
