About Rearrange PDF Pages

Page order problems almost always come from the scanner, not the document — a sheet feeder that pulled two pages at once, or a stack loaded upside down. This tool shows every page as a thumbnail so you can move them into the right sequence, spin individual pages upright, and drop the ones that shouldn't be there, then export the result as a new PDF. One thing to know before you start: the export builds a fresh document from the pages you keep, so the page content survives exactly but anything attached to the old document structure does not.

When to use Rearrange PDF Pages

Fixing a duplex scan that came out interleaved

Scanning a double-sided stack on a single-sided feeder gives you all the fronts, then all the backs. Reorder them into 1, 2, 3 here — or use Alternate & Mix PDF if the fronts and backs arrived as two separate files.

Moving an appendix to the end

Reports often get assembled with the appendix in the middle because that's where the source file sat. Move it to the end without re-exporting from the original application.

Trimming a document before sending it on

Removing internal cover sheets, blank separator pages and pricing pages from a document you're forwarding, while leaving the rest of the pages untouched.

Straightening pages scanned sideways

Landscape tables scanned in a portrait stack come out rotated. Rotate only those pages, instead of rotating the whole file and breaking the ones that were already upright.

Limitations worth knowing

  • Bookmarks and the document outline are not carried over. The export creates a new document containing only the pages, so a navigation tree built in the original is lost — check this before reorganising a long reference document that depends on one.
  • Interactive form fields do not survive. If the PDF contains fillable fields, flatten it first or the field data will be dropped.
  • Internal links that pointed at a specific page can break, because the pages are renumbered and the old link destinations are not rebuilt.
  • Document metadata — title, author, subject — is not copied to the new file.
  • A password-protected PDF can be opened for reorganising, but the export is not encrypted. The protection is not carried over.
  • The whole file is held in memory while you work, so scans of several hundred megabytes can be slow on a phone.

How to rearrange pdf pages

  1. 1

Load your PDF — every page renders as a numbered thumbnail.

  2. 2

Use the left and right arrows on a thumbnail to move that page earlier or later in the sequence.

  3. 3

Click the rotate button to turn a page 90° clockwise; click again for 180° and 270°. Rotation is added to whatever rotation the page already carried.

  4. 4

Click the trash icon on any page you want to drop.

  5. 5

Click Export. The kept pages are written to a new PDF in the order shown, saved as your-file-organized.pdf.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my bookmarks disappear after reorganising?+

Because the export builds a new document from the pages you kept rather than editing the original in place. Page content is copied across exactly, but the outline holding the bookmarks belongs to the document rather than to any individual page, so it isn't part of what gets copied. If the bookmarks matter more than the page order, reorder in the application that produced the PDF instead.

Does rotating here change the file, or just the view?+

It changes the file. The rotation is written into each page's rotation property, so every viewer opens the page the way you left it. That's the difference between this and rotating in a PDF reader, which usually only turns your current view and forgets it when you close the file.

Can I reorder pages across two different PDFs?+

Not here — this works on one file at a time. Merge the files first, then reorganise the combined document. For two files that need interleaving page by page, which is usually odd and even scan stacks, Alternate & Mix PDF does it in one step.

Does reordering reduce the page quality?+

No. Pages are copied as they are, not re-rendered or re-compressed, so a scan keeps its original resolution and text stays selectable. The output size should be close to the sum of the pages you kept.

Troubleshooting Rearrange PDF Pages

The exported PDF has the pages in the right order, but the form is now blank.

Why it happens: The original contained interactive form fields, which live in the document's form structure rather than in the page content that gets copied.

How to fix it: Start again from the original: flatten it first so the field values become part of the page, then reorganise the flattened copy.

A page still looks sideways after rotating it.

Why it happens: The page already carried a rotation and the tool adds to it rather than replacing it, so a page stored at 270° that you rotate once lands at 0° — not always what the thumbnail led you to expect.

How to fix it: Keep clicking rotate until the thumbnail looks upright. The thumbnail shows the final orientation, so trust it rather than counting clicks.

Thumbnails take a long time to appear, or the tab stops responding.

Why it happens: Every page is rendered to an image up front, which is memory-heavy for documents of several hundred pages.

How to fix it: Split the document into smaller chunks first, reorganise each chunk, then merge them back together.
